Pickleball Court Types

Traditional Hard Court

Hard courts are the most commonly used tennis court surface in the United States. Known for their medium-fast pace of play, these courts can be customized to adjust speed and cushioning through various surfacing techniques.

While hard courts involve a higher initial installation cost, they offer the advantage of lower long-term maintenance expenses. In this region, a well-maintained hard court typically has a service life of 15 to 20 years. However, actual longevity will vary based on site-specific conditions such as drainage, climate, and usage.

To maximize performance and lifespan, routine maintenance and timely repairs are essential. We recommend resurfacing hard courts every 5 to 7 years to preserve surface quality and ensure optimal playability.

Post Tension Courts

Post-tensioned concrete tennis courts offer a premium, long-lasting solution for high-performance play. This advanced construction method uses high-strength steel cables (tendons) embedded within the concrete slab, which are tensioned after the concrete has cured. The result is a structurally reinforced court that is highly resistant to cracking, even under shifting soil or freeze-thaw conditions.

Ideal for both residential and professional installations, post-tensioned courts are especially suited for areas with challenging soil conditions. Though the initial investment is higher than traditional asphalt or standard concrete courts, the reduced need for major repairs makes them a cost-effective choice over time.

Cushion Systems

Our cushion court systems are engineered with multiple layers of rubberized materials to significantly reduce the impact on players' joints, offering a more forgiving alternative to traditional hard courts. These surfaces maintain similar play characteristics while delivering a noticeably softer feel—perfect for those prioritizing comfort and injury prevention.

Ideal for older players or those recovering from joint issues, cushioned courts help minimize stress on the knees, hips, and lower back, making play safer and more enjoyable.

While cushion systems are among the more premium surfacing options, they represent a long-term investment in player well-being. Available in a range of configurations—from economy to high-end systems—each can be tailored to meet your specific performance and budget needs.

This surface is also a fantastic choice for pickleball, providing the same joint-friendly benefits and high-quality playability for athletes of all ages and skill levels.

Clay Systems

Clay tennis courts are a top choice for players who enjoy a slower-paced, more strategic game. These courts naturally slow down ball speed and produce a higher bounce, encouraging longer rallies and improving shot control. Ideal for developing endurance and refining technique, clay courts are a favorite for both recreational and professional-level play.

Built using compressed stone materials like shale, brick dust, or crushed stone, clay tennis courts offer a unique playing surface with a softer impact on joints, making them a great option for injury prevention and long-term playability.

However, clay courts require a higher level of maintenance compared to hard courts. Daily upkeep during the playing season—including watering, rolling, and brushing—is essential to ensure consistent bounce and a smooth, even surface. Over time, refurbishment and resurfacing may also be necessary to keep the court in top condition.

Pickleball Court Types

Hard-Court Pickleball Construction

The most common type of tennis court in the U.S. is the hard-court system. The play is typically medium-fast, but this can be controlled with a variety of methods. Hard-courts are quite expensive to install, but they are relatively low on long-term maintenance costs. For this geographical area, and if properly maintained, a hard-court has a service life of 15-20 years; however, the ultimate life of any hard-court is dependent upon site specific variables. Court repairs and maintenance will be necessary over the life of a court, and a court should be resurfaced no less than every five to seven years.

Cushion Pickleball Court Construction

The cushion system is a multi-layered rubberized surface designed to reduce the impact on an athlete's body. It offers a softer feel than a traditional hard court while still maintaining similar playability, making it ideal for those seeking added comfort and joint protection. This surface is especially beneficial for older players or individuals with previous injuries, as it minimizes stress on the knees, hips, and back. While it is one of the more expensive options to install, it’s a worthwhile investment for long-term comfort and injury prevention. The cushion system comes in a range of options, from economy to premium, allowing for customization based on specific needs. It's also an excellent choice for pickleball, providing the same joint-friendly support for players of all levels, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience on the court.

Clay Court Construction & Maintenance

Clay courts are known for slowing down the pace of play and providing a higher bounce on the ball, making them a popular choice for players who prefer longer rallies and a more controlled game. However, they can be more expensive in the long run due to high maintenance and refurbishment costs. Made from compressed stone materials such as shale, brick, or crushed stone, clay courts require daily attention during the playing season. This includes regular watering, rolling, and monitoring to maintain an even playing surface and optimal conditions.

Multi-Purpose Pickleball Courts

The multi-purpose sport surface is gaining popularity at a great pace. Youth-tennis, pickleball, volleyball, basketball, futsal, shuffleboard, and many other court layouts are readily available. These additions are usually low-cost and are met with much satisfaction

Crack Repair

Court cracking is the most common problem for outdoor hard-court surfaces. Even expertly designed, installed, and maintained asphalt and concrete surfaces will crack over time. We offer the proper repair and maintenance of all court cracking. The systems we use range from fabric bridging systems, asphalt overlays, carpet overlays, and many more.

Crack-Filler Installation

The cheapest option for repairing cracked courts is our crack-filler installation. Crack-repair material is filled into the crack, ground down smooth, and a surface coating is installed over the patched areas. This repair is only temporary because hairline cracking will reappear once the temperature reaches fifty degrees Fahrenheit.

Fabric Crack Repair

The most common type of crack repair we install is a fabric crack repair system, which uses flexible fabrics and adhesives to bridge over the cracks. The court is resurfaced which covers the patched areas. This crack repair system works wonders because, as the asphalt base continues to shrink, the water-proof fabric expands and contracts with the base, covering the crack and keeping moisture at bay. This repair will look great and will last for years. It will not solve all court cracking issues though. The best option to eliminate court cracking is to rebuild.

Pickleball Court Crack Repair & Resurfacing Solutions

Cracking is the most common issue affecting outdoor hard tennis courts, especially those made from asphalt or concrete. Even with expert construction and regular maintenance, cracks are inevitable over time due to weather, ground movement, and natural aging.

At Tennis Technology, Inc., we specialize in professional tennis court crack repair and resurfacing services to restore surface integrity and extend the life of your court. Our proven repair methods range from cost-effective crack fillers to durable fabric crack repair systems and overlay solutions designed to accommodate any budget and condition.

Crack-Filler Installation (Temporary Repair)

Our most affordable option for addressing court cracks is crack-filler installation. This process involves filling cracks with specialized crack-repair materials, grinding them smooth, and applying a surface coating over the treated areas. While this is a quick and cost-effective solution, it is only a temporary fix—hairline cracks may reappear as temperatures fall below 50°F, due to continued expansion and contraction of the court base.

Best for: Budget-conscious court owners looking for a short-term fix.

Fabric Crack Repair System (Longer-Term Solution)

Our most popular and effective repair method is the fabric crack repair system. This system uses a combination of flexible waterproof fabrics and adhesives to bridge over existing cracks. Once installed, the court is resurfaced, creating a smooth and seamless finish.

As the underlying asphalt base shifts with seasonal changes, the fabric layer expands and contracts, preventing new cracks from forming and keeping moisture out—a major factor in long-term surface damage. This solution provides years of reliable performance and a visually appealing surface.

Best for: Clients seeking a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing repair without full reconstruction.

Additional Tennis Court Crack Repair Options

We also offer:

  • Asphalt overlays
  • Carpet overlays
  • Reconstruction consulting and full rebuilds

While no crack repair system is permanent, these methods significantly extend court lifespan and improve playability. For courts with severe structural issues, the most effective and permanent solution is complete court reconstruction.
